Your internet provider sees every site you visit. Not the content of your messages — that's usually encrypted — but the pattern itself: when, where, for how long. It sees that you searched symptoms at three in the morning, looked up a divorce lawyer, browsed a rival political party's site. That data is a product. It lets sites plant trackers that follow you across different domains, assembling a unique "fingerprint" of your device even without cookies, from your screen resolution, fonts, and system version, a combination that's nearly unique to you. Search is another collection point. Every search query is, in effect, a confession — what worries you, what you're planning, what you're sick with.
